Chlorine bleach in cleaning products also presents a problem when it enters the water cycle. It combines with naturally occurring organic products, such as plant debris in natural waterways, forming chlorinated organic compounds that, like organochloride pesticides, can both cause cancer and disrupt the endocrine system. Scents used in many cleaning products also have endocrine disrupting chemicals that we both inhale and that end up in wastewater.

Many household cleaning products consist of a few relatively safe and effective ingredients combined with many noxious ingredients to impart color and smell.76 These ingredients are also preservatives that give the cleaner a very long shelf life. These products also often contain agents that keep the active ingredient dissolved so we don’t have to shake them before use.

We have come to equate the scent of these volatile organic compounds with the scent of cleanliness. It’s important to begin to associate these scents, and colors, with branding and marketing rather than cleanliness. These are not clean scents; they are chemical scents. Clean is the absence of infringing scents on the surrounding environment. Clean means we can smell fresh air, real flowers and plants, or what is cooking in the kitchen.

Paints, paint thinners, and motor oil should be disposed of on household material recovery days or at disposal sites, not down the drain.77
